Discovering Music

My sincere thanks goes out to Marie, Emma, Davey, and Kari for your excellent suggestions. They were almost all right on, and led me in some rewarding directions. Here's my working list of stuff you've probably been listening to for years now. (Subject to editing without notice.)

•Rediscovered Pink Maritni's GREAT sound. I heard it many moons ago and never bought any, but should have bought it all.
•Edie Brickell's new one: Volcano (especially the song "Take a Walk")
•Brett Dennen- liked everything I've heard so far.
•Enjoyed Ben Folds (Five).
•Keane- yeah, I can see why they opened for U2. I might be a fan.
•Why don't I own any Barenaked Ladies? Hate the name- cheap shot, guys- but I'm a fan of the music.
•New Riders of the Purple Sage- where was I?
•Beth Nielsen Chapman, Brandi Carlile, Dashboard Confessional- nice sound, not sure I'm going to like all of it.
•Madeleine Peyroux- I own one album, but I think it's the wrong one for me.
•Susan Tedeschi- like Hope and Desire a lot.
•Davey- get yourself a yummy hat- I'm not (yet) a Jeff Buckley fan. There's not much of that kind of darkness left in my life- maybe if I had heard him when I was 17....
•Belle and Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, Aqualung, Thomas Cunningham, Jem- lots of promise, I need to hear more. (New computer is on its way.)
•Jamie Cullum- I've had his Pointless Nostalgic album on my Amazon list for a couple of years now. I should probably buy it.
•Jack Johnson- slam dunk for me, I think. I will probably acquire all three albums.
•Jason Mraz- yup, I think so. (He's from Mechanicsville, VA?)
•Donovan Frankenreiter, Josh Kelley, Nada Surf- yeah, maybe.
•Nickel Creek: oh yeah- I did like this! I was getting it confused with Nickelback- whoa, not the same. Thanks for the rediscovery.

Ok, got anything else?

Sorry I'm late to the game on this one. Here's my current mellowey playlist:

Barra Barra - Rachid Taha - off the Black Hawk Down soundtrack, but its an amazing arabic[?] song I totally can work to.

Fidelity and Samson both by Regina Spektor

Worn me Down - Rachael Yamagata, which I found on musicovery. Born in Arlington.

Joan Jett of Arc - Clem Snide - I like Eef Barzelay's distinctive voice, and this isn't their catchiest song, but its the one that grew on me. You might also try their cover of "Tears on my Pillow" or "The Sound of German Hip-Hop".

Hold On, Hold On - Neko Case - Currently my favorite female vocalist - distinct patsy-cline-like voice. Born in Alexandria.

The Green Fields of France - Dropkick Murphys - Though better known for their celtic-infused punk, I like their pretty version of this anti-war classic about a man who died in WWI.

The Police and the Private - Metric

In this Life - Chantal Kreviazuk - a few years old, but I still like it.

Grace Kelly - Mika - You'll be hearing a lot of this catchy song later this summer on the radio, methinks.

Hounds of Love - The Futureheads catchy background vocals keep this one on the list.

Hey, do you use your gmail address for your itunes account? Maybe i'll gift you a few songs!

Honestly? You don't like him? But I don't want to eat my hat :-( it was supposed to be hyperbole! [sniff] Stupid Internet, giving Maren so much music she doesn't like Jeff Buckley.

Maybe I can save Davey from capelophagia - have you listened to JB's "Lilac Wine"? I like that one - not too dark. And his version Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is every bit as good as Rufus Wainwright's, in a different way.

I get the giggles every time I see Dave's new picture. Plus he found the word for hat-eating (or made it up.) More giggles.

I have not heard of at least 3/4 of this stuff - wow, do I have a lot to listen to! I think I may start buying cd's again (instead of individual itunes songs). I think I'll start by having Maren make me copies of the new cd's she buys on her *NEW?* computer! I was kind of surprised when you said Nickel Creek wasn't for you, but glad it was a misunderstanding.

Oh. My. Gosh. Nasty! Kari- did you just google that or is it a site you were previously aware of? Yikes. Davey- you DON'T have to eat your hat. (Do any of you have the Muppet Show with Elton John when Sam the Eagle has to eat his hat? That's what I always think of.)

But, as I alluded to, I have a VERY slow circa 2003 emac, and doing all this music research on sites that use flash and stuff has been a rather painful process. My NEW imac is scheduled to roll in here approximately tomorrow, so I promise to give JB another listen or two soon.

Dave- how do you come up with this stuff? Now that I have my toe in the water of current musical offerings, how to I stay current like you? No, I use my defunkt hotmail, I think. My itunes account is really old. I should maybe change that (so you can gift me songs anytime you want). Why will I be hearing "Grace Kelly" on the radio? Did you read the part where I strolled through the radio dial?!

By the way, I love the picture. Does your friend have a name?

Here is a way to keep your toe in.

My friend is the mini-'Crocodile Dentist' I bought ostensibly for Enoch but then brought to Camp Nerdly (where the piccie was taken). Its actually my friend Andy's hand in its mouth.

Kari - there didn't seem to be a word for it, but I knew it'd be some kind of -phagia, so I went out & found the greek word for hat (kapelo) and anglicized it.

You'll be hearing Mika because I believe that song is on the soundtrack to I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, or at least its in the trailer, about 3/4 of the way through.

I, um, don't really know how I find new music. I used to follow stereogum, but I don't have time to sift wheat from chaff there. Now the only music blog I subscribe to is Copy, Right?, which is exclusively covers. At one point I downloaded a whole ton of mix-cd torrents that had loads of indie goodness, and discovered several of my current favorites by sifting through that. I feel like right now I'm not really in 'discovery mode', and am probably falling behind.

I know, Nastfest. I Googled "edible hat" and this was the most shocking.
